Low Cholesterol And Erectile Dysfunction – Can Reducing Your Cholesterol Levels Help Your ED?
Low Cholesterol And Erectile Dysfunction – Can Reducing Your Cholesterol Levels Help Your ED?
In this article, I talk about the relationship between low cholesterol and erectile dysfunction and answer the question that may have popped into your mind a few times in the past already – Can lowering your cholesterol help you to get better stronger erections?
Towards the end of this article, I give those that need to control their cholesterol numbers a few natural choices to help get their cholesterol under control and help your cardio health as well as your erectile dysfunction. I also explain why statins are not the answer for sufferers of ED.
What Is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is essentially speaking fat based lipoproteins that are either low density or high density. One is good and the other is not so good for your cardiovascular health. Do remember what is bad for your heart’s health is bad for your erectile health – so which is which?
I am sure that you have seen the letters LDL and HDL everywhere on food labels, newspapers, health magazines and mentioned on the television. LDL means Low Density Lipoprotein and HDL stands for High Density Lipoprotein.
How to tell the two apart and to commit them to memory comes from a simple rearrangement of the meaning of the first two letters in each of them.
LDL – Lowly Desireable Lipoprotein
and
HDL – Highly Desireable Lipoprotein
From these new definitions, it is pretty clear which is the good one and which is the bad one. When it comes to Cholesterol our end goal is not zero cholesterol as our body needs it for a variety of functions including the production of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen*. Cholesterol also helps for a more efficient metabolism and production of vitamin D.
*yes guys, you need estrogen – just not as much as our lovely ladies do – just much less of it approximately 10% of what a woman needs!
Low Cholesterol And Erectile Dysfunction – Does Controlling Your Cholesterol Help Get You Harder?
In a word yes! controlling your cholesterol numbers does help you to get better, stronger and longer lasting erections. Cholesterol is a known underlying cause of the sexual dysfunction that blights us men, so controlling it and reducing your cholesterol will help improve your sex life.
This is primarily because cholesterol, the bad stuff, the LDL is a waxy fatty substance that sticks to and builds up on the walls of your veins and arteries inhibiting the natural flow of your blood – yes even down there in the trouser department.
It can also lead to other underlying causes of impotence such as high blood pressure and reduced production of testosterone – the very hormone that helps get you hard and enhance your sex drive.
What Are The Ideal Cholesterol Numbers?
For adult men with no previous cardio problems or disease a desirable cholesterol level for total cholesterol, both LDL and HDL is lower than 200mg per decilitre of blood. A High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol score of 60mg or more per decilitre of blood helps to protect you against coronary heart disease while lower than 40mg per deciliter is considered as a high risk for coronary heart disease!
This is exactly why the goal is not zero cholesterol – especially as far as HDL is concerned!
How To Lower Your Bad Cholesterol Naturally
Lowering cholesterol naturally does involve will power and of course, discipline especially if you are a couch potato and junk food addict like I am – or once was! Little by little I am changing those bad habits for good healthier ones.
The most obvious and two major changes that can help you to crunch those cholesterol number is, of course, a remedy of good old-fashioned diet and exercise.
-
Diet
And ideal diet consists of plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and fresh fish at least three or four times per week.
Some simple changes that you can include is ditching the white bread and rice for brown bread and rice, snacking on fresh fruit instead of potato chips and swapping the sugar-laden fizzy drinks for water or a homemade juice or a smoothie.
Cutting out fried breakfast and replacing it with oats and fruit or a very delicious and highly nutritious breakfast smoothie will help lower your bad LDL cholesterol numbers.
-
Exercise
Exercise, something that we could all benefit from more of – unless of course, you are an Olympic Athlete!. Exercise helps in three ways – it helps to lower cholesterol, reduce excess body fat and increase the amount of the erection inducing molecule nitric oxide in your body.
Those are 3 very valid reasons to get active if you are not already!.
The best type of exercise for erectile dysfunction and reducing cholesterol is to get one-hour brisk aerobic exercise at least 4 times per week with some added strength training thrown in for good measure.
When it comes to your health and the potential of improving your sex life don’t let the age old excuse of not having enough time get in your way!. If you need a little help workout wise then check out the old school new body program, which is ideal if you lead a busy lifestyle and are over the age of 35.
